Peyronie’s Disease
Overview
Peyronie’s disease is a condition characterized by the development of scar tissue in the erectile tissue of the penis, causing it to bend or curve during an erection. If you experience pain, inflammation, or notice a curve in your penis, it is important to consult one of our competent urologists for evaluation and guidance on available treatments.
General Information
What is Peyronie’s Disease?
Peyronie’s disease involves the formation of plaques (hardened collagen) in the penis. These plaques can cause scar tissue to develop inside the erectile tissue, leading to penile pain, changes in shape, and altered rigidity during erection. The condition can occur spontaneously or from an injury to the penis. Left untreated, Peyronie’s disease can lead to long-term complications.
Symptoms of Peyronie’s Disease:
- Noticeable bend or curve of the penis when flaccid or erect
- Penile tenderness
- Painful erections and/or sexual intercourse
- Difficulty achieving orgasm
- Softer than usual erections
Diagnosis
To diagnose Peyronie’s disease, your urologist will conduct a thorough physical examination and review your medical history. Additional tests, such as ultrasound imaging, may be used to assess the extent of the scar tissue and determine the best course of treatment.
Treatment
Following your consultation, an individualized treatment plan will be developed based on the severity of the curve and the degree of erectile dysfunction. Treatment options range from medications to surgical procedures.
Common treatments include:
- Medications: To reduce pain and plaque formation.
- Injections: Directly into the scar tissue to break it down.
- Shockwave Therapy: To improve blood flow and reduce pain.
- Surgery: In severe cases, surgical options may include plaque removal, penile implants, or plication (shortening the unaffected side).
Our urologists will work with you to determine the best treatment option for your specific condition.
